Partner with Iron Mountain and Make Every Day Earth Day

April 15, 2011

Iron Mountain takes its commitment to environmental responsibility seriously. Recognizing that we all share the duty to manage and care for our natural resources, Iron Mountain integrates and applies environmental values into what we do every day.

Leveraging Nature’s Resources

Iron Mountain is at the leading edge of green IT innovation to optimize energy efficiencies and reduce data center costs.
Iron Mountain's Room 48, a ground-breaking data center that sits in a former limestone mine 220 feet below the earth in the Underground, was named one of InfoWorld™ Magazine's Green 15 IT projects for 2010. The Green 15 annually recognizes the most innovative IT initiatives aimed at boosting energy efficiency, trimming waste, and reducing or eliminating the use or the production of harmful substances.

Room 48

Under the leadership of Iron Mountain's Global Facilities and Engineering teams, Room 48 was designed to utilize the unique properties of the Underground for natural heating and cooling advantages, removing many of the power and space constraints of typical data center cooling techniques, and serves as a model for future innovative data center designs.

A fully operational data center, Room 48 leverages the natural features of the Underground that increase overall energy efficiency, including:

  • Limestone walls that keep the data center temperature at a consistent 55 – 65 degrees
  • A reflectorized light tube reduces data center lighting load and allows heat from the light to dissipate into the limestone
  • Wires and cables positioned above server racks where they are naturally cooled by the limestone walls.
