Domain Name Registrar Data Escrow
Domain Name Escrow
Iron Mountain’s Domain Name Registrar Data Escrow provides a protected, secure environment for the storage of definitive domain name information.

Registrar Data Escrow Protection

When ICANN needed a partner to deliver a protected, secure Registrar Data Escrow program, they looked to the world’s largest provider of information and intellectual property management solutions: Iron Mountain.

The Registrar Data Escrow program was initiated by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to protect data associated with registered domain names in a secure escrow environment. Iron Mountain was selected to implement and execute Registrar Data Escrow as an analogue to our longstanding role as a provider of comprehensive Domain Name Registry Data Escrow services (link to: Domain Name Registry Data Escrow) as well as our recognized leadership in securing and protecting mission-critical information for corporate and government clients worldwide.

Protecting and securing the world’s domain name information

Iron Mountain’s Domain Name Registrar Data Escrow provides a protected, secure environment for the storage of definitive domain name information. If a problem occurs with an ICANN-accredited registrar, the registrar’s data escrow account can be referenced and used to make definitive decisions on domain name ownership. As a neutral third party, Iron Mountain’s Registrar Data Escrow service offers ICANN and domain name registrars:

  • Registrar deposits via secure FTP (SFTP), which allows for content encryption, ensures transfer integrity and validates deposit authenticity
  • Online RAID storage of encrypted, deposited data for thirty days in redundant form
  • Tape backup of data, with storage for one year
  • Destruction of “expired” data after one year
  • Online storage servers located in Iron Mountain’s ultra-secure underground facility in Western Pennsylvania
  • Secure, offsite vault facilities for tape backup storage
  • Unlimited storage size – Iron Mountain routinely receives terabytes of digital record deposits daily

In essence, Iron Mountain’s Registrar Data Escrow serves as an under-the-radar safeguard, ensuring the continuity of service across the Internet. While its existence may never be seen or noticed by users, Registrar Data Escrow nevertheless serves as an important tool in delivering peace of mind to ICANN and domain name registrars worldwide.
