The Emmett Leahy Award

The Emmett Leahy Award, established in 1967, is the highest honor attainable for individual accomplishment in the information and records management profession.

Given in honor of Emmett Leahy, the pioneer of information and records management, the Award is underwritten by Iron Mountain Incorporated as part of our commitment to manifesting and recognizing excellence in records management.

The Emmett Leahy Award is presented annually by the Institute of Certified Records Managers at its annual meeting, which is held concurrently with ARMA International's Annual Conference. Selection of the award recipient is made by the Emmett Leahy Award Committee, which is composed of ten past winners.

Past Recipients of the Emmett Leahy Award

Luciana Duranti - 2006 Emmett Leahy Award Recipient

Luciana Duranti, the recipient of the 2006 Leahy Award, is Chair of the Master of Archival Studies at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies of the University of British Columbia, Canada. She is a Professor of archival theory, diplomatics, and the management of digital records in both master's and doctoral archival programs. She was educated in Italy at the University of Rome "La Sapienza."

Dr. Duranti's research aims at finding solutions to digital records issues that are not specific to a given socio-cultural and juridical context but can be universally applied. She is the Director of InterPARES, a multinational, collaborative and interdisciplinary research project on the long-term preservation of authentic electronic records. For the InterPARES contribution to the management of authentic digital records Dr. Duranti has been honored with the 2006 British Columbia Innovation Council Award, which is annually presented by the Premier and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Canada to "an individual who has opened new frontiers to scientific research."

Dr. Duranti has been widely recognized for her research contributions. She was honored in 1999 with the Academic of the Year Award given by the Canadian Universities Faculty Associations; in 2006, with the Killam Research Prize of the Canada Council for the Arts; and, in 2007, with the Jacob Biely Research Prize, the University of British Columbia's "premier research award." For her overall contributions to the records and information field, she has been appointed by the Italy's Government to the Supreme Council for Cultural Properties (2007-2010), and by the President of UNESCO to the International Advisory Committee of the Memory of the World Program (2007-2011).

Dr. Duranti is also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Electronic Records Archives (ACERA) of the National Archives of the United States.

Charles Dollar - 2005 Emmett Leahy Award Recipient

Charles M. Dollar is an internationally recognized expert on the life cycle management of electronic records, particularly electronic records archiving. A prolific writer, Mr. Dollar is alsob a frequent speaker on electronic records management and digital preservation issues at conferences and workshops around the world.

Mr. Dollar is the author of more than twenty publications and reports on life cycle electronic records management issues.

His Experience includes twenty years working with electronic records at the National Archives and Records Administration. He has served as Archival educator at the University of British Columbia and as a consultant to governments and businesses in North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

While he was on the staff of the National Archives, Mr. Dollar organized and directed the first electronic records program for the U.S. federal government and subsequently had a major role in research projects on digital technology standards, digital storage media, and digital imaging applications in electronic archiving.

Mr. Dollar, who holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Kentucky, is a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists.

Bruce Miller - 2003 Emmett Leahy Award Recipient

Bruce Miller is President of RIMtech, a vendor-neutral e-records consulting services firm. Mr. Miller is widely regarded as the inventor of modern electronic recordkeeping software. He co-founded Provenance Systems in 1989, where he pioneered ForeMost, the world's first commercial electronic recordkeeping software, now owned by EMC/Documentum Corp.

In 1997 he achieved the world's first eRecords software certification against the US DoD 5015.2 standard, and has since presided over several successful 5015.2 certifications. He founded Tarian Software in 1999, where he developed the world's first eRecords software engine for business software. That year he received ARMA Canada's National Capital Region's Ted Ferrier Award of Excellence for his contribution to the field of records management. Tarian was the first eRecords technology in the world to be certified against the revised 5015.2 June 2002 standard. In November 2002 Tarian was acquired by IBM, where Mr. Miller served for three years as IBM's eRecords Strategy and Business Development Executive.

Mr. Miller is currently authoring a book entitled "Implementing Electronic Recordkeeping Software - a Methodology for Success", scheduled for publication in 2007.

Bruce holds a Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology and a Masters in Business Administration from Queen's University.
