The Natural Choice

Are you particularly concerned with energy efficiency, security, compliance, or backup and disaster recovery? Have you considered Iron Mountain's underground data center offering?

Iron Mountain underground data centers feature numerous benefits such as natural energy efficiency, reduced risk of natural and man-made disasters, nearly unlimited floor-load weight capacity and an additional physical security layer specific to the subterranean nature of our facilities.

Underground data center benefits start with natural energy efficiency that contributes to low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). For example, year-round ambient temperatures can stay as low as 52°F. Compared to a traditional data center in a southern state where summer temperatures approach or exceed 100°F, our underground data center cooling infrastructure does not have to work as hard to maintain ideal temperature levels, and therefore consumes less energy. Additionally, there is 100 to 220+ feet of earth insulating each facility from surface weather conditions. At WPA-1, there is even an aquifer providing a convenient supply of naturally cooled and recyclable water, saving millions of gallons every year.

Iron Mountain underground data centers are surrounded by natural limestone, which is six times stronger than concrete. This is ideal when loading heavy infrastructure, cabinets and other materials in and out of the facility. Such equipment could chip or break standard raised floor tiles used in other facilities. Keep colocated systems safe with perimeter security, armed-guard checkpoints, metal detectors, mantraps, biometric access controls, and CCTV cameras. Increased security combined with carrier-neutral access to dark fiber and national providers, maximum uptime and comprehensive compliance support for FISMA High, HIPAA, ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, and SOC 2 Type II make Iron Mountain underground data centers ideal for production, backup and disaster recovery needs.

Underground data center services are available at Iron Mountain's Western Pennsylvania and Kansas City locations.
