Iron Mountain’s Media and Archive Services team moves to a new 16,000 square foot studio, expanding services like X-ray digitization and 3D capture.

Over the past four months, Iron Mountain’s Media and Archive Services team has gutted, built and moved into a new 16,000 square foot state-of-the-art studio with no production loss. Completely an internal effort, the Boyers Media and Archive Services team, composed of both studio and operations colleagues, worked together setting up what is the largest move in our history. 

Engineers, techs, and management all split their time, adding to the load of their already busy daily routines and responsibilities, to make it happen. I’m so proud of our collective, professional effort. 
 
Our new studio space has allowed us not only to expand our current services, but also add to our menu of services such as X-ray digitization, 3D capture, and AMICS. Our new technology and new methods allow us to continually provide our clients with the best archival and preservation services. Plus, we now have “room to grow” -  the sky's the limit for this team in this new home of ours!

Matt Steck, one of our audio engineers, remarked to me that taking on this move was a challenging process in logistics and planning each step of the way. But, he added, that it's an honor to work with such a dedicated team that shares our genuine love for what we all do.

I couldn’t agree more with him. 

If you visited Boyers before our move, you may have seen our smaller, 6,000-square-foot space that was more than twenty years old. Our studio existed in the deepest part of the Underground - Boyers’ nickname - and contained all of our services in one small room.  

There were less than ten people when I started eighteen years ago. Now, our team consists of over thirty experts in audio, video and imaging services. Over time we increased from one studio engineer to four engineers, but our space remained the same with all of us crammed into one suite. Video production was in a former closet and imaging was essentially a desk with a couple of teammates. 

Over the last few years, thanks to the efforts of solutions architect Bethany Boarts, imaging has exploded. And, thanks to the advocacy of our Director of Client Solutions, Bob Koszela, we were able to gain another room, ultimately taking over a second facility which became our new imaging center. 

But it still wasn’t enough.  

We continued to expand and eventually ended up occupying three, small, 2000 sq. ft. rooms far into the Underground. Logistically, this was not ideal: this resulted in our teams being split up; asset management was challenging; and frankly, the spaces didn't exactly scream, "high-tech digital archive crew.” While the studio cranked out production and continued to be a hotspot for tours, the need for a new and proper facility was obvious. The fact that this team was able to remain a leader in the industry in spite of our hurdles and restrictions is profound. 
 
After visiting several possibilities over the past few years, with the help of Boyers’ director of property and project management, Jim Wendelschaefer, we were able to locate what I felt would be the perfect space. This is where we could again join forces under one roof: one team working across all disciplines, for one goal.
