IBM Security and the Ponemon Institute recently issued their annual Cost of a Data Breach Report for 2019. The report was based on in-depth interviews of 507 companies across 16 geographies and 17 industries who experienced a data breach between July 2018 and April 2019.

Key findings included the following:

· The average cost of a data breach globally was $3.92 million – $8.19
million in the U.S.

· The average size of a data breach was 25,575 records

· The highest industry average cost was healthcare – $6.45 million

· The percentage chance of experiencing a data breach within two years
was 29.6% in 2019, an increase from 27.9% in 2018.
