How Agentic AI and cybersecurity will define our future
Predicting the future is a difficult task. But trying to look ahead, perceive trends, and shape the future is a noble mission. In 2025, two overarching technology developments will define our future:
Generative AI and large language models (LLMs) changed everything. While artificial intelligence (AI) has been around for decades, the swift adoption of generative AI in 2024 catalyzed AI deployments at “warp speed.” In short, generative AI has ushered in the next frontier, and now, Agentic AI has arrived.
Agentic AI is a major leap ahead of traditional AI assistants. New AI agents don’t just react and respond, they interact. AI agents can make decisions, ingest unstructured and diverse data sets, get smarter, and interact with other agents—all done independently, without human oversight. That means entire complex tasks can be handled autonomously by Agentic AI.
The global AI market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 36.6% from 2023 to 2030, reaching USD 1,811.75 billion by 2030.
Specific to Agentic AI, Gartner predicts that by 2028, 15% of day-to-day work decisions will be made autonomously through Agentic AI, up from less than 1% in 2024.
Realizing the incredible promise of Agentic AI--new capabilities, efficiencies, and opportunities—also comes with a notable caveat. Data is at the heart of Agentic AI (and all forms of AI), which is wholly dependent on AI-ready data. An Iron Mountain survey with over 1,400 enterprises revealed that only 16% of organizations have a comprehensive AI data strategy in place. Thus, most organizations and their data are not yet ready to fuel AI and its next frontier, Agentic AI.
As organizations rush to deploy Agentic AI, data readiness cannot be overlooked; without it, AI deployments will stall, and scalability will be impeded. In contrast, organizations that build an AI-ready data foundation today will likely enjoy AI-powered competitive advantages tomorrow.
Cybercrime represents the world’s third-largest economy, following the US and China, and is forecasted to reach $10.5 trillion in 2025. Advancements in AI are a major contributing factor, dramatically increasing potential consequences worldwide.
As a result, cyberattacks rank among the most formidable challenges confronting organizations today. No business is immune to cyber threats, and cyberattacks are escalating in volume, growth, and sophistication. New and ever-evolving holistic approaches to cybersecurity are an organizational mandate.
Even more concerning is the expanding impact of cybercrime. Threats faced by businesses are overshadowed by the potential dangers to societies, national security, and public safety. That’s because cyber aggressions are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure such as energy grids and healthcare systems, areas that can have deep and far-reaching consequences.
Ironically, AI is both “the poison and the cure.” As AI helps to rapidly scale cybercrime efforts, it is also being used to mitigate emerging cyber threats and fortify safeguards.
In 2025, beyond the importance to businesses of all types and sizes, newfound cybersecurity approaches will be critically important to both national and global security.
As the new year unfolds, Agentic AI and cybersecurity are two key pillars underpinning our future. The journey and possibilities ahead promise to be exciting.
