March is Women’s History Month
Women’s history month is celebrated in March. This is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in contemporary society.
The first Women's History Day was held in 1909. The day became Women's History Week in 1978. In 1987, it became Women's History Month. Every Women's History Month has a theme. This year's theme is: “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.” They will focus on women's political involvement and leadership.
International Women's Day
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.
IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.
International Women's Day values: Justice, dignity, hope, equality, collaboration, tenacity, appreciation, and respect.
Step Forward to...
Imagine a gender-equal world.
A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Together we can forge women's equality.
Collectively we can all #EmbraceEquity.
A message from Iwona Sikora, SVP & MD Europe & South Africa
Across our over 1,400 strong Women@IM community in partnership with our other Employee Resource Groups (ERG) we are passionately changing the culture of equity across our company and in our communities. Now is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, #EmbraceEquity.
We know today, looking at the world outside Iron Mountain, that women and girls enjoy greater rights and opportunities than at any other time in history, but we still have work to do. I recently read a report from the United Nations (UN) that predicts at the current rate of progress it may take another 286 years to remove discriminatory laws and close prevailing gaps in legal protections for women and girls - and I was dumbfounded.
The gender snapshot report doesn’t make for easy reading but I would encourage you all to explore as it connects gender to the UN shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
We know equity is not a subject that has a single solution. Across our community we’ve talked about biases and microaggressions we’ve faced, the challenges of returning to work after becoming a parent, hiring and flexible working policies, and the need for women to prioritize their mental health. The more we share and highlight issues that impact us, the more we can engineer change.
As a signatory of the UN Global Compact, Iron Mountain is committed to ensure society is an equitable, sustainable, and livable place where we can all thrive. We know, when we empower women, society and the economy grow.
As a mother, daughter, wife, friend, and teammate I #EmbraceEquity. For me, equity is a basic right that all women should have the ability to create the life they wish to lead, free from barriers and societal stereotypes. A future where people regardless of gender, race, age, ethnicity, ability, religion or sexual orientation are treated alike and given the same opportunities.
I’m so grateful to be part of this network of strong women and allies. Our Women@IM Community is a powerful, safe place. We listen, learn, advocate and challenge each other, and the company to do more and do better. Thank you for all you do!
