Pro Sound News recently reported on Iron Mountain Media and Archive Services’ partnership with the Bob Dylan Archive to save 62 2-inch original recordings by the Nobel-winning artist that were suffering from adhesion syndrome. This challenge affects many older audio tapes, where the aging of the tape material itself is causing the edges of the tape to become bound together with age. If tapes with this problem are not properly remediated before playback for digitization, the original recordings can be accidentally destroyed when the tape is unwound and layers of the media rip apart. Kelly Pribble, Iron Mountain Media and Archive Services’ Principal Studio Engineer & Preservation Specialist, worked with the Bob Dylan Archive team to save many recordings in the collection from adhesion syndrome.
