Iron Mountain Commits to the RE100 and Science-Based Targets- A hand holding a bulb

On June 4, 2018, Iron Mountain committed to 100 percent renewable energy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help meet the Paris Climate Accord. We are one of 130+ multinational corporations to commit to using renewable energy sources for 100 percent of our worldwide electricity; we have pledged to follow a rigorous standard for green power purchasing and achieving aggressive milestones on the way to a complete conversion by 2050

The RE100 is a global initiative led by The Climate Group which works with international business leaders and governments to advance technologies and policies to cut global emissions and accelerate a low carbon economy. In addition, Iron Mountain has set aggressive science-based targets for carbon reduction by the end of 2019. Our collaboration with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) will help Iron Mountain, along with other companies, determine how much we need to cut emissions to do our part to reverse climate change. This puts Iron Mountain in alignment with the global goals of the Paris Climate Accord.

"We're proud to be among the earliest adopters of renewable energy," said Bill Meaney, CEO. "Understanding the impact of our energy usage has led to the adoption of energy and greenhouse gas reduction strategies that are helping the company save money, reduce environmental impacts and better serve our customers. In making these commitments today, we are setting aggressive public goals with the endorsement of well-respected non-profit organizations, accelerating our efforts to foster strong economic growth while operating as a responsible, ethical and sustainable company."

While our business continues to grow, we have reduced carbon emissions by 6.6 percent year-after-year. Due to our renewable energy expansion, we have increased our renewable energy usage by more than 110 percent. Currently, 40 percent of our North American electricity use is renewable and 100 percent of our data center energy use is renewable.

"The RE100 Initiative and Science Based Targets Initiative are prominent and world-class commitments. Only an estimated 100 corporations worldwide have joined both the RE100 and SBTi," said Kevin Hagen, VP of Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy. "In 2017 we delivered impressive results doing our part to meet the goals of the Paris Climate agreement – in ways that reduce costs and make our business better. I think every Iron Mountain employees can take pride in our company's progress and our customers, investors and community partners will, too."
