According to the World Economic Forum, humankind’s insatiable demand for electronic devices is creating the world’s fastest-growing waste stream.  Electronic waste (E-waste) is now the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. It is estimated that this waste stream reached 48.5 million tons in 2018.  Globally, society only deals with 20% of e-waste appropriately.  Much of the rest ends up in landfill or is disposed of by informal workers in poor conditions. Yet e-waste is worth at least $62.5 billion annually, which is more than the gross domestic product (GDP) of most countries.  While the proliferation of electronic devices is part of the problem, they can also be a big part of the solution.  A more digital and connected world will help us accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering unprecedented opportunities for emerging economies.
