Iron Mountain Media and Archive Services offered its expertise to digitize oral histories in legacy formats and process metadata in military-specific terms to support a new traveling exhibition.
The Military Women's Memorial, situated at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is the only major national memorial honoring all women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It serves as a historical repository documenting the contributions, experiences, and stories of military women, from the Revolutionary War to the present. The memorial is dedicated to preserving these legacies, educating the public about the roles women have played in the military, and inspiring future generations with their tales of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.
The Military Women's Memorial, located at Arlington National Cemetery's entrance, faced a significant challenge in modernizing its archive. With a collection that spans various legacy formats like CDs, DVDs, and Video Cassettes, MWM needed to digitize oral histories and other content to preserve and make accessible the rich narratives of servicewomen. This task was crucial for honoring the diversity and contributions of America's servicewomen, especially women of color, whose stories are pivotal yet often underrepresented in historical documentation.
Iron Mountain Media and Archive Services digitized oral histories in legacy formats and processed their metadata.
Our work helped migrate and organize data which became part of the MWM’s mobile exhibition called, “The Color of Freedom: Honoring the Diversity of America’s Servicewomen,” as part of their AppreSHEation Tour. The content calls attention to the sacrifices and contributions of all women, and women of color in particular, that have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
