The strategic advantages of Chennai Colocation in India

Strategic location in South India's manufacturing capital with exceptional connectivity, AI-ready infrastructure, and rapid market growth

South India's Submarine Cable Landing Hub

Chennai serves as India's primary submarine cable landing station, with the majority of India's 17 major subsea connections landing in Mumbai and Chennai. India's international bandwidth demand is forecast to multiply tenfold by 2028 with a CAGR of 38%. Our Chennai campus offers carrier-neutral infrastructure with all Tier 1 carriers on-site, Metro Wave connectivity, dark fiber availability, and redundant meet-me rooms with diverse fiber points of entry. Chennai also benefits from AWS local zones and the growing presence of cloud providers as hyperscalers expand throughout India.

AI-Ready Infrastructure for Hyperscale and Enterprise Deployments

Our Chennai data centers deliver TIA 942 Rated 3 infrastructure designed for both enterprise and hyperscale AI workloads. The campus features liquid-cooled compliance, N+2C block redundancy, A/B underground feeds, and comprehensive certifications, including SOC 1, SOC 2, PCI DSS, and ISO 9001, 14001, 22301, 27001, 50001, and 14064. As India's data center capacity has grown beyond the 1500 MW forecast, our phased Chennai campus development provides scalable, compliant infrastructure for organizations requiring world-class uptime and security.

Manufacturing Hub with World-Class Tech Workforce

Chennai's reputation as a major automotive, engineering, and hardware manufacturing hub positions it as one of India's largest hubs for hardware manufacturing and exports, providing a robust ecosystem for technology operations. India's IT and business process management industry employs over 5 million people and holds a 55% share of the global IT services market, making it an attractive destination for data center companies. Chennai offers compelling economics for India colocation in a rapidly growing market forecast to reach $25.5BN in cloud services by 2028.

Akamai customer success story

The challenge

Targeting 50% renewable energy for its worldwide operations by 2020, Akamai needed sustainable space in the New York tri-state area. A critical success factor for achieving more sustainable operations included access to wind, solar, or other renewable electricity to power the Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform in the New York metro area. Affordability, innovation, and efficiency were vital for this essential data center project.

The results

The new data center, once it is running at 90% capacity, will account for about 6% of Akamai’s total U.S. electricity load and about 4% of its global load, making vast strides toward their renewables target. Cost savings and efficiency gains are certain, helping to make Akamai's operations even more sustainable. Iron Mountain's Green Power Pass allows Akamai to report on the green power they consume at our data centers.

In their words

“A critically important aspect of our business case was finding a partner who not only met our renewable energy requirements but also understood what we were trying to do and could help us to achieve our goals. With Iron Mountain, we found a partner who could do all that — in ways that gave us a competitive advantage.”
Director of Sustainability, Akamai
