Frequently asked questions
What makes Madrid unique as a data center market?
Madrid is emerging as Southern Europe's premier data center hub, with capacity projected to grow from 116 MW in 2022 to 613 MW by the end of 2026. The city's strategic location between Europe, North Africa, and Latin America, combined with recent submarine cable investments (Marea to Virginia, EllaLink to São Paulo, Orval to Algeria, 2Africa), has transformed Spain's connectivity profile. Spain's advanced digital infrastructure includes the EU's highest FTTH penetration (87%), strong 5G readiness, and 46.7% renewable energy generation. With all major hyperscalers—Microsoft, Google, AWS, IBM, and Oracle—establishing cloud regions in Madrid, this Spain data center market offers exceptional growth potential at highly competitive pricing.
Why choose a San Fernando de Henares data center location over central Madrid?
Our San Fernando de Henares campus location in Madrid's northeastern "Golden Triangle" provides distinct advantages for data center operations. The site offers immediate access to Madrid-Barajas International Airport (10-minute drive), direct connectivity to the Barcelona-Madrid fiber backbone (Spain's highest-capacity route), positioning within hyperscaler cloud availability zones (Microsoft, IBM, Google, Oracle, AWS), and substantial land availability for phased expansion to 79 MW. This emerging industrial corridor provides the power infrastructure, fiber density, and expansion capacity that modern data center operations require, while maintaining low-latency connectivity to central Madrid and the broader European network. Our campus offers superior scalability, competitive economics, and purpose-built infrastructure for both enterprise and hyperscale deployments.
How many data centers does Iron Mountain operate in Madrid?
Iron Mountain currently operates MAD-1, our initial 4.000-square-meter facility with 3 MW of current capacity. Our 60,000-square-meter campus master plan supports aggressive expansion, with up to 79 MW of IT load across multiple planned facilities. For the Spain colocation and data center market, our phased development roadmap includes MAD-2 (10 MW, 2027 delivery), MAD-3 (10 MW, 2027 delivery), MAD-4 (10 MW, 2029 delivery), MAD-5 (10 MW, 2029), and MAD-6, MAD-7, MAD-8 (36 MW each, 2030 delivery). With power permits secured for the full 79 MW campus buildout and two on-campus substations planned, we provide the scalability and long-term capacity that growing organizations require. Upon completion, this will be Spain's largest data center campus.
What compliance certifications do your Madrid data centers hold?
Our Madrid data centers maintain comprehensive compliance certifications aligned with European standards and global best practices, including Tier III design and operational standards, ENS (Esquema Nacional de Seguridad), ISO 27001 (Information Security Management), ISO 50001 (Energy Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 22301 (Business Continuity), SOC 2 Type II attestation, and signatory status to the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact. Our facilities are designed to support customers in regulated industries, including financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, and government sectors.
What network and cloud connectivity options are available?
Our Madrid campus provides extensive connectivity options as Spain's premier data center market. Our Madrid campus is carrier-neutral, located on top of the main Barcelona-Madrid fiber backbone, the highest-capacity fiber highway in the country. On-site carriers include Vodafone, Telefónica, Orange, MásMóvil, and Colt, with dark fiber availability from Lyntia and Correos Telecom. The campus connects to major internet exchanges, Espanix and DE-CIX Madrid, both handling volumes over 1 Tbps. Madrid hosts cloud regions from all major hyperscalers, including Microsoft Cloud Region, IBM's first Spanish Multi-Zone Cloud Region, Google Cloud Region, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and AWS. The location provides access to key submarine cable systems, including Marea (connecting Bilbao to Virginia), EllaLink (Madrid-Lisbon-São Paulo), Orval (Valencia-Algeria), and the 2Africa cable.
What other data centers does Iron Mountain have in Europe?
Iron Mountain operates a strategic portfolio of data centers across key European markets. Beyond our Madrid campus, we maintain facilities in London (LON-1, LON-2, LON-3), Frankfurt (FRA-1, FRA-2), and Amsterdam (AMS-1), positioning us within the FLAP markets that represent Europe's most established data center ecosystem. Our data centers in Spain, on our Madrid data center campus in San Fernando de Henares, serve as our gateway to Southern Europe, Latin America, and North Africa, where we are executing an aggressive expansion roadmap to 79 MW of capacity. This multi-market presence allows us to deliver geographic diversity, low-latency connectivity across Europe, and scalable infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of enterprises and hyperscale customers throughout the region.
