Richmond data centers

Richmond data centers represent Virginia's fastest-growing overflow market and offer the second-highest concentration of data centers in Virginia. Our data center Richmond campus is located at White Oak Technology Park in tax-friendly Henrico County, providing minimal latency to Northern Virginia infrastructure while offering the space and power capacity needed for growth. The Richmond colocation campus is positioned along the I-64 and I-95 corridors, connecting to Northern Virginia and the subsea fiber cable landings in Virginia Beach, with 55% of the U.S. population within 750 miles.

Iron Mountain's Richmond data center campus will include four data centers in Virginia (RCH-1, RCH-2, RCH-3 and RCH-4) on a 66-acre site at White Oak Technology Park. Additional data center expansion is in development. RCH-1 will deliver 48 MW across 6 data halls starting in Q1 2029. RCH-2 will add 48 MW across 4 data halls beginning in 2028. RCH-3 will provide 60 MW across 6 data halls starting later in 2028. RCH-4 will also provide 60 MW of capacity across 5 data halls. All buildings have a phased roll-out between Q1 2028 - Q2 2029. The Richmond colocation campus will offer customers over 200 MW of power and well over a million square feet of colocation space.

The Richmond campus will be ideally suited for highly regulated customers, thanks to its rigorous compliance program, which will encompass HIPAA, FISMA High, FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, PCI-DSS, SOC 2 Type II, and SOC 3. The campus will also maintain comprehensive ISO certifications, including ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 50001 (energy management), ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO 22301 (business continuity), and ISO 14064 (greenhouse gas emissions). Iron Mountain is the only provider to comply with ISO 27001, ISO 50001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 worldwide.

Richmond data centers serve a strategic role within Virginia's broader data center ecosystem, which includes established markets like Ashburn and Manassas in Northern Virginia, as well as emerging markets such as Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. Iron Mountain's Richmond campus adds more than 200 MW of expected capacity on a 66-acre site, while the Manassas campus extension adds an estimated 150 MW of additional capacity on a 142-acre development site. Richmond offers advantages as an overflow market from the congested Ashburn area, providing the space and power increasingly difficult to secure in Northern Virginia data center markets. Both Richmond and Manassas data centers in Virginia benefit from abundant infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce, strong fiber connectivity, and a pro-business community, with Richmond offering particularly competitive advantages for organizations seeking proximity to both Northern Virginia and the Virginia Beach subsea cable landing stations.

The Richmond data center campus features a 300 MVA dedicated substation with over 200 MW of customer power. Dominion Energy is building a new 230kV double-circuit loop fully within White Oak Technology Park to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the Virginia data center campus. All facilities feature Block N+1 redundancy and A/B underground feeds for maximum reliability. The campus is powered by 100% renewable energy.

The Richmond campus is carrier-neutral and cloud-neutral, providing access to multiple carriers on site. The campus features redundant MMRs and fiber PoE (Point of Entry), with metro cloud access, SD-WAN options, and WAN connectivity options. The data center is located adjacent to multiple long-haul fiber providers, giving a huge range of connectivity options. All major cloud providers, SDNs, CDNs, IXs, and global tier-1 networks are available, along with a wide range of global and regional networks and hundreds of ISPs and MSPs.
